Sanwo-Olu orders four active dumpsites, more trucks to tackle Lagos waste

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered immediate measures to expand the state’s waste disposal capacity, improve truck turnaround and strengthen waste collection operations across the state.

The Governor gave the directive during his visit to the Olusosun dumpsite on Wednesday, as part of efforts by the state government to address operational challenges confronting waste management and improve environmental sanitation in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu said the state government was working towards having four active dumpsites operational within the next six weeks, a move aimed at reducing pressure on individual disposal locations and ensuring smoother waste evacuation across the state.

He also disclosed that two Transfer Loading Stations were being developed at Olusosun and Solous 3, with a combined capacity designed to improve the movement of waste from collection points to recovery and disposal facilities.

According to him, Material Recovery Facilities are also being planned to support waste sorting, recycling and resource recovery, in line with the state’s long-term objective of developing a more efficient and sustainable waste management system.

The Governor said immediate steps were being taken to improve truck turnaround time at Olusosun, including increasing the number of tipping platforms beyond the existing two.

He added that additional compactor trucks had been ordered to strengthen the state’s waste collection fleet and address existing capacity gaps.

Sanwo-Olu further said the state government would provide additional funding for road stabilisation, equipment and other operational requirements needed to improve waste disposal operations.

He directed the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to strengthen its operational workforce by deploying more personnel to streets, roads and dumpsites to improve service delivery.

The Governor reaffirmed that achieving a cleaner Lagos required the collective responsibility of government, residents and operators, urging all stakeholders to play their part in maintaining a clean environment.

The measures, he said, reflected the government’s approach of combining immediate operational interventions with long-term infrastructure investments to build a more efficient, sustainable and resilient waste management system.

Sanwo-Olu said the state was taking practical steps across infrastructure, equipment, truck turnaround and disposal capacity to strengthen waste management and achieve a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
