Lagos arraigns over 100 suspects for breach of peace in VI, Lekki, Ajah

The Lagos State Government has arraigned over 100 suspects before the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, over alleged breach of public peace and other offences in Victoria Island, Lekki and Ajah.

The suspects were arrested between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026, in the Victoria Island-Lekki-Ajah axis, according to a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

The prosecution, led by Mrs. Oluwabusola Omotunde on behalf of the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, said the defendants were charged with breach of peace, unlawful conversion of government property to personal use and conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.

During the arraignment, some of the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, while others pleaded not guilty.

Presiding over the proceedings, the Chief Magistrate of the Mobile Court, Hon. F.J. Adefioye, emphasised the need for deterrence while ensuring that due process was followed.

The court sentenced the defendants who pleaded guilty to Counts I and II to one month and two months of community service or imprisonment, respectively.

The statement said the sentences were to run consecutively.

Those who pleaded not guilty were remanded and granted bail, each with two sureties.

The Coordinator of the Mobile Court, Mr. Olufemi Adekunle, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining law and order while protecting legitimate businesses and residents across the affected areas.

Adekunle said similar Mobile Court sittings would continue across the state, stressing that the measure was aimed at ensuring prompt prosecution of offenders and keeping public spaces safe for residents and businesses.

He said the government would continue to take steps to prevent activities capable of disrupting peace and order in Lagos.
