Ikola Road Violence: Four Killed, Buildings Set Ablaze as Police Deploy Operatives

Four adult males have been killed following a violent clash in the Ikola axis of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, with several persons injured and some structures reportedly set ablaze during the unrest.

The incident occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Power Line Bus Stop, Ikola, following a disagreement that escalated into violence between two groups.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the death of four adult males in the incident.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency received a distress call concerning a fire outbreak in the area at about 1:52 p.m. and arrived at the scene approximately 25 minutes later.

According to him, the unrest resulted in the destruction of several makeshift structures, while emergency responders provided medical assistance to injured victims.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service subsequently brought the fire under control, while a joint security operation involving the Police, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps was deployed to restore order.

However, the Lagos State Police Command gave a different account of the immediate cause of the violence, saying preliminary information indicated that suspected area boys had stopped a tricycle rider and demanded ₦200 from him.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebesi, said the rider allegedly refused to pay, after which the group seized his tricycle.

She said the rider later returned with some persons, resulting in a violent confrontation between the two groups.

“Sadly, three (3) persons were reportedly killed, while two (2) others sustained injuries,” Adebesi said in a statement issued on Thursday.

The Police Command also confirmed that some buildings were set ablaze during the violence and said the deceased and injured persons were taken to the Military Hospital, Yaba, for necessary medical attention and other procedures.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Olaiwola Fatai, accompanied by the Commander, 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Afolabi Owolabi, visited the scene to assess the situation and coordinate the security response.

Following the incident, the Command deployed personnel from the Rapid Response Squad, Taskforce, Tactical Squad, Police Mobile Force, Eko Strike Force and Violence Crime Response Unit to the area.

The Police said the situation had been brought under control, with security operatives maintaining law and order and monitoring the area to prevent further escalation.

“The situation is firmly under control, and efforts are ongoing to prevent any further escalation,” the statement said.

The Command said it had commenced investigation into the incident and vowed to ensure that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

It also urged residents to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information and avoid actions capable of further escalating the situation.

LASEMA similarly appealed to residents to avoid reprisals and the spread of unverified information, adding that investigation had commenced to determine the immediate and remote causes of the unrest.

The agency said anyone found culpable would be prosecuted.

While LASEMA confirmed four deaths, the Police Command’s initial account put the number of fatalities at three. Further investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the full extent of the violence.
