The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued a critically injured road crash victim who was allegedly abandoned by a fleeing motorist at Ojota, Lagos.
The incident occurred over the weekend on the main carriageway around Ketu inward Ojota, where the unidentified motorist reportedly struck the victim and fled the scene, leaving him critically injured and unattended.
The victim was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple traumatic injuries, including severe fractures and a serious head injury, according to LASTMA.
In a statement issued on Sunday, August 9, 2026, the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said the agency’s officers immediately secured the scene, controlled traffic and took steps to protect the victim and other road users from further danger.
Taofiq said the officers also contacted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), whose medical personnel arrived at the scene to assess the victim.
He said the medical team expressed grave concern over the severity of the injuries, particularly the multiple fractures and serious head trauma, which required specialised medical attention and comprehensive trauma care.
The LASTMA officers, he added, remained at the scene to safeguard the victim while further emergency-response options were explored.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the alleged abandonment of the victim by the fleeing motorist, describing the action as “reprehensible” and irresponsible.
Bakare-Oki said any motorist involved in a road crash had a moral and legal obligation to stop, assess the situation, summon emergency responders and, where practicable, render reasonable assistance to injured persons.
“The decision by a motorist to flee the scene of a crash, particularly where another person has sustained life-threatening injuries, is deeply reprehensible and could have devastating consequences,” he said.
He added: “In emergencies of this nature, every second is consequential.”
The LASTMA boss commended the officers who responded to the incident for their courage and professionalism, saying the agency’s rescue and emergency-response mandate remained focused on protecting lives and mitigating the consequences of road traffic crashes.
He also appealed to eyewitnesses, motorists and other members of the public with credible information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the fleeing motorist to provide such information to the appropriate law-enforcement authorities.
LASTMA urged motorists to exercise caution and discipline on Lagos roads, warning against excessive speed, reckless driving and other practices capable of endangering the lives of other road users.
The agency also advised members of the public to promptly alert emergency-response agencies whenever road crashes occur, stressing that the preservation of human life should take priority at crash scenes.
