Tinubu hails rescue of 308 abductees, orders stronger early warning system

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed the rescue of 308 Nigerians abducted in separate attacks in Kwara and Niger states, directing security agencies to strengthen early warning systems, enhance intelligence gathering and improve rapid response to forestall future incidents.

The 308 victims, comprising 163 abducted from Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State and 145 from Niger State, were rescued from the Kainji Lake National Park Forest in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State.

The President’s directive was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the victims were rescued during a coordinated intelligence-led operation carried out by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in collaboration with personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.

The Presidency described the operation as the largest same-day rescue mission ever undertaken by the joint security team.

President Tinubu commended the leadership and personnel of the security agencies for their courage, professionalism and seamless inter-agency collaboration, noting that their commitment made the successful operation possible.

“The successful execution of this intelligence-led operation demonstrates the growing efficiency and collaboration among our security services. I commend our gallant men and women in uniform for their bravery and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives,” the President said.

The statement disclosed that the rescued victims are receiving first aid and other essential medical attention at the medical facility in Wawa Cantonment before being handed over to their respective state governments for rehabilitation and reunion with their families after medical evaluation.

While welcoming the successful rescue, Tinubu stressed the need to strengthen the nation’s security architecture to prevent future attacks.

He directed security agencies and relevant stakeholders to immediately reinforce early warning mechanisms, deepen community-level intelligence gathering and improve rapid response capabilities across the country.

The President also reassured Nigerians of his administration’s resolve to eliminate security threats, protect vulnerable communities and restore lasting peace across the nation.
