Popular Yoruba actress Tope Osoba reportedly dies at 41, fourth Nollywood loss in 2026

By Adebola Isimijola, Lagos

The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following reports of the death of popular Yoruba actress and producer, Temitope Osoba, popularly known as Tope Osoba, at the age of 41.

According to reports on Wednesday, the actress died less than a year after surviving a battle with breast cancer, an illness that forced her to step away from acting for several months. The reports have, however, not been officially confirmed by her family.

If confirmed, Osoba’s passing would make her the fourth prominent Nollywood practitioner reported to have died in 2026, further deepening the wave of losses that has hit Nigeria’s film industry this year.

Osoba had taken a break from acting to focus on her treatment before making a return to the screen in 2025 after recovering from breast cancer. Although she resumed her career, she maintained a low public profile in recent months amid reports that she was again battling health challenges.

News of her reported death has sent shockwaves across the entertainment industry, with colleagues, fans and other stakeholders remembering her as a vibrant and talented performer whose resilience inspired many after her public battle with cancer.

As of the time of filing this report, members of her family had yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances surrounding her reported death.

If officially confirmed, Osoba would join the list of notable Nollywood figures who have died this year, underscoring what many stakeholders have described as a difficult period for Nigeria’s film industry.
