Driver killed in lone crash on Oshodi-Apapa expressway

LAGOS — A driver was killed in a lone road accident on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway at Charity Bus Stop, inward Iyana Isolo, in the early hours of Friday.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq.

According to LASTMA, the Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) involved in the crash lost control and overturned several times before coming to a halt.

The agency said the impact of the crash was severe, resulting in the instant death of the driver, whose body was trapped in the wreckage.

LASTMA officials and officers of the Mosafejo Police Division responded to the scene and carried out rescue and recovery operations, while traffic was managed to prevent further accidents and ease vehicular movement along the busy route.

The remains of the deceased were later evacuated by officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) to a public mortuary.

LASTMA said the wrecked vehicle had been handed over to the police for investigation into the cause of the accident.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy with the family of the deceased and urged motorists to obey traffic regulations.

He warned against reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and excessive speeding, stressing that road users must place the preservation of human life above every other consideration.

“No journey is so urgent as to justify compromising safety,” Bakare-Oki said.

Police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
