Ogun Police arrest suspected one-chance robbers, rescue alleged burglar from mob attack

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested two suspected “one-chance” robbers in Abeokuta and rescued an alleged burglar from mob attack in separate operations across the state.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in statements made available to journalists on Thursday.

According to the police, operatives of Obantoko Division arrested two suspected “one-chance” robbers terrorising Obantoko and neighbouring communities, while also recovering a stolen iPhone 12 Pro and other mobile phones suspected to have been stolen from victims.

Babaseyi explained that the arrest followed a distress call received at the division on May 28, 2026, at about 5:15 p.m., concerning a robbery incident involving a female victim and her two sisters.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the victims had boarded a Nissan Micra taxi from the Somorin area en route to NNPC Kuto before the occupants of the vehicle allegedly deviated from the agreed route around the OLG Somorin axis, became violent and dispossessed them of their valuables.

The victims were reportedly pushed out of the vehicle after the attack.

“Upon receipt of the distress report, detectives of Obantoko Division, in collaboration with vigilant members of the public, swiftly mobilised to the scene, leading to the arrest of two suspects identified as Odunuga Kehinde and Olajide Rasak, while the operational vehicle escaped from the scene,” the police spokesperson stated.

He added that police operatives prevented angry residents from lynching the suspects after they were apprehended.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to the crime, while the stolen iPhone 12 Pro and other suspected stolen phones were recovered from them.

The police said the recovered iPhone had been released to its owner on bond, while the suspects remain in custody pending the conclusion of investigation and prosecution.

In a related development, operatives of the FUNAAB Division rescued a 41-year-old man, identified as Olaleye Williams, from mob attack in the Oluwo community near the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), after he was allegedly caught attempting to burgle a shop.

Babaseyi said the suspect was apprehended in the early hours of May 27 following surveillance mounted by traders over repeated shop break-ins in the area.

He disclosed that the suspect had already sustained injuries before police operatives arrived at the scene.

“The suspect was apprehended in the early hours of May 27 while allegedly attempting to steal goods from a shop following surveillance mounted by traders who had experienced repeated theft in the area,” he said.

The spokesperson added that detectives swiftly intervened, rescued the suspect from the mob and ensured he received medical attention before taking him into custody for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended officers involved in both operations and reiterated the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention across the state.

He also warned residents against jungle justice and urged members of the public to always report criminal activities to security agencies for lawful action.
