No fewer than 11 persons have died after a vehicle plunged off Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.
The accident occurred late Saturday night, according to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
In a statement made available to journalists on Sunday, the FRSC Public Education Officer in the state, Florence Okpe, said the crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE 722 KJ.
Okpe explained that the vehicle reportedly somersaulted before plunging off the bridge, trapping the occupants after the doors locked on impact.
“All 11 occupants of the vehicle, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the crash,” she stated.
She added that rescue operatives from the FRSC Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene, while officials, with the assistance of residents, dismantled parts of the vehicle to recover the victims.
The bodies were later deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.
The FRSC attributed the crash to suspected drunk driving and overloading.
Reacting, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists travelling along the Abeokuta-Lagos corridor to drive cautiously, especially at night.
He also commiserated with the families of the deceased.
