A dispatch rider was on Monday, April 20, 2026, crushed to death by a speeding tanker at Motorways inward Estate, Alapere, Lagos.
According to a statement issued the same day by Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident occurred when the driver of an empty NIPCO tanker, allegedly driving at excessive speed, rammed into the moving motorcycle.
The impact, the agency said, killed the rider instantly and sparked tension in the area.
LASTMA officials, however, moved swiftly to the scene, preventing a breakdown of law and order as angry dispatch riders reportedly attacked the tanker driver.
The officers rescued the driver from the mob and handed him over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical treatment after he sustained serious injuries.
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force from Alausa Division were subsequently deployed to restore calm and disperse the aggrieved crowd.
Reacting, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as avoidable.
He cautioned tanker drivers and other motorists against speeding, stressing that reckless driving remains a major cause of road fatalities across the state.
The agency added that the tanker and the wreckage of the motorcycle have been handed over to the police, while investigations are ongoing.
