Lagos begins 35-day Ozumba Mbadiwe Road rehabilitation

By Adebola Muili

The Lagos State Government has commenced a 35-day rehabilitation of Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, with motorists facing traffic diversions along the busy corridor to allow construction work to proceed.

The rehabilitation covers the section between Adetokunbo Ademola Street/Civic Centre and Samuel Manuwa Street/BJ, with a contraflow arrangement on the Lagos-bound carriageway to enable repairs on the opposite lane.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, had announced the traffic management measures in an advisory issued on October 15, outlining alternative routes for motorists throughout the rehabilitation period.

Under the arrangement, motorists travelling from Bonny Camp and Falomo towards Civic Centre and Lekki are to use Adeyemo Alakija Street by Muri Okunola Park, connect to Adeola Hopewell Street and Akinbo Savage Street, and proceed through Bishop Aboyade Cole Street to School Corner near Black Diamond before heading towards Sandfield.

Motorists travelling from Falomo towards Akin Adesola Street can use the IMB route to connect to the Coastal Road entrance through Adetokunbo Ademola Street, proceed to Eko Hotel Roundabout and continue through Ajose Adeogun Street and Ligali Ayorinde Street towards Black Diamond School Corner.

Those travelling from Bonny Camp are advised to use Ahmadu Bello Way to reach Eko Hotel Roundabout through the IMB/Coastal Road entrance before connecting to Ajose Adeogun Street and Ligali Ayorinde Street towards Black Diamond School Corner.

Motorists travelling from Eko Hotel through Adetokunbo Ademola Street towards Civic Centre will be diverted through Bishop Aboyade Cole Street and School Corner near Black Diamond towards Sandfield.

Those exiting through the 1004 Estate gate, as well as other road users along the route, are to turn left or make a U-turn in front of the gate before proceeding through Bishop Aboyade Cole Street towards School Corner.

Similarly, motorists travelling from Eko Hotel towards Falomo and Ikoyi are to use Sanusi Fafunwa Street to connect to Akin Adesola Street and proceed towards the ramp bridge.

Osiyemi said the state government would deploy officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to coordinate vehicle movement, reduce congestion and minimise inconvenience during the rehabilitation.

He urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead, obey traffic officials and cooperate with the traffic management measures throughout the construction period.

The rehabilitation forms part of the state government’s road maintenance programme along the Victoria Island-Lekki corridor, a major route serving residential and commercial areas of Lagos.
