A 55-year-old motorist narrowly escaped death on Friday, October 9, 2026, after a moving train collided with his Honda car on the PWD railway track in Lagos, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged and causing traffic congestion around the area.
The incident involved a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT and a train travelling towards Agege. The driver escaped without injury despite the severity of the collision, while no casualty was recorded at the scene.
Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), working alongside security personnel, swiftly rescued the motorist and facilitated the removal of the wrecked vehicle from the railway track.
Their intervention cleared the obstruction and enabled the train to resume its journey towards Agege. However, vehicular movement around the PWD axis remained severely impeded, with traffic congestion continuing along the affected corridor after the incident.
The wrecked Honda car was subsequently handed over to security personnel for investigation into the cause of the collision, LASTMA said in a statement issued on Friday, October 9, 2026.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency’s operatives and the security personnel involved in the emergency response for their promptness, coordination and professionalism.
Bakare-Oki said the response demonstrated the importance of effective collaboration among relevant agencies in managing emergencies and preventing further complications at accident scenes.
He noted that vigilance, situational awareness and timely intervention were essential in mitigating the consequences of unforeseen transportation incidents, particularly those involving railway operations and adjoining road infrastructure.
The LASTMA general manager also emphasised the need for motorists to observe railway safety regulations and exercise exceptional caution when approaching railway crossings and designated train corridors.
He warned against attempting to cross railway tracks when a train was approaching or already in motion, stressing that disregard for safety procedures could lead to devastating and irreversible consequences.
In the statement, signed by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, the authority appealed to motorists and other road users to demonstrate heightened vigilance and comply strictly with established traffic and railway safety regulations.
The authority maintained that the preservation of human life must remain paramount in all road-use decisions, adding that responsible conduct, anticipatory caution and strict observance of safety instructions could help prevent avoidable collisions.
