The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned five suspects before the Ota Magistrate Court over the alleged attack on police officers, damage to a patrol vehicle and the escape of a handcuffed suspect in the Ota area of the state.

The suspects were arrested following an attack on a police patrol team around The Bells area, Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, on October 2, 2026, when the officers were conveying an arrested suspect to the station.

The police said the suspect had earlier been arrested after he was found in possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

According to a statement issued by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, on Wednesday, October 7, the patrol team was ambushed while conveying the suspect, with the attackers allegedly using cutlasses, stones and bottles to assault the officers.

Babaseyi said the attack left some police personnel injured, while the operational vehicle was damaged and the handcuffed suspect escaped in the ensuing incident.

He said the command subsequently launched an intelligence-led operation which led to the arrest of five persons identified as Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32.

The suspects were arraigned on charges bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The police spokesman added that efforts were ongoing to arrest other suspects believed to have fled the scene.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, warned members of the public against physically confronting police officers carrying out lawful duties.

Ojajuni said, “The safety of police officers performing lawful duties remains a priority of the Command.”

He urged members of the public to channel grievances through established lawful channels rather than resorting to violence against law enforcement personnel.
