The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered consignments of hard drugs concealed in water purifier machines imported from the Netherlands, while also intercepting military-grade ammunition and arresting several suspects in coordinated operations across the country.
The agency said its operatives recovered three kilograms of ketamine and 199 grams of MDMA, popularly known as Ecstasy, hidden inside water purifier machines shipped from Europe and intercepted at a courier company in Lagos.
NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the seizures formed part of ongoing efforts to curb illicit drug trafficking and related crimes nationwide.
In Kaduna State, operatives arrested a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, alongside Salomi Ezekiel, 38, after recovering 100 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 1,246 kilograms from their residence in the Gonin Gora area.
The agency also intercepted 380 rounds of military-grade 7.62mm ammunition along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway near Jere. The ammunition was allegedly being transported to Katsina State by a 30-year-old suspect, Sunusi Musa.
According to Babafemi, the suspect and the ammunition have been handed over to the appropriate security agency for further investigation.
In another operation, NDLEA operatives acting on intelligence raided a warehouse at Gidan Kukah in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State, where 457 kilograms of skunk were recovered. A suspect, Godwin Zakka, 46, was subsequently arrested in connection with the seizure.
Similarly, along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, operatives intercepted a commercial vehicle travelling to Taraba State and recovered 22,000 tablets of tramadol, 100 ampoules of pentazocine and 200 grams of bromazepam. A suspect, James Maigari Wisdom, was arrested during the operation.
Beyond enforcement activities, the agency said its Commands and formations across the country sustained the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign through sensitisation programmes in schools and communities, including institutions in Cross River, Taraba, Lagos and Anambra states.
Commending the officers involved in the operations, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), praised personnel of the Kaduna, Niger and Enugu Commands, as well as the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation (DOGI), for their commitment to drug supply reduction and public enlightenment.
He urged officers across the country to remain resolute in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse.
